Maison Buccellati: A Legacy of Elegance and Craftsmanship

Buccellati jewels have symbolized unparalleled beauty and quality for over a century, drawing inspiration from Italy's rich heritage of craftsmanship and goldsmithing traditions. The story of Buccellati began with its founder, Mario Buccellati, a visionary who forged a distinctive style that continues to captivate admirers worldwide.

The Beginnings of Buccellati

Mario Buccellati was born in Ancona on April 29, 1891. After his father's death, he moved with his family to Milan, where he apprenticed with the goldsmiths Beltrami and Besnati. Here, Mario mastered the art of Italian goldsmithing, learning ancient techniques and materials while honing his understanding of customer tastes and workshop management. Mario's keen observation and appreciation of Milanese elegance laid the foundation for his future success.

Establishing a Unique Style

In 1919, after the First World War, Mario Buccellati opened his first store at Via Santa Margherita 5 in Milan, taking over the business of Beltrami and Besnati. Mario’s innovative work quickly garnered fame, such as transferring lace weaving onto gold plates. By 1925, he expanded to Rome and Florence, further cementing his reputation as a master jeweler.

One of Mario’s most significant influences was his friendship with the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio. Their artistic exchanges led Mario to experiment with new styles, resulting in iconic pieces that remain celebrated today.

Expansion and Innovation

The post-war period saw Mario's sons joining the business, with Gianmaria focusing on creative endeavors and Lorenzo and Federico on commercial expansion. The 1950s marked Buccellati’s entry into the American market, opening a store in New York City and later in Palm Beach. This era also saw the creation of the Hawaii collection, a timeless design expanded by Andrea Buccellati in the 1990s.

Throughout the decades, Buccellati continued to innovate, using materials like Tombac during wartime shortages and inventing the Eternelle ring, a symbol of eternal love. The brand’s expansion into silverware and collaborations with renowned photographers and designers further elevated its status in the luxury market.

Global Recognition

Buccellati’s global presence grew with opening boutiques in prestigious locations such as Paris and Tokyo. Gianmaria Buccellati’s passion for gemstones led to the founding of the Italian Gemological Institute. At the same time, the brand’s artistic collaborations and exhibitions, such as those at the Smithsonian Institution and Moscow Kremlin Museums, showcased Buccellati's craftsmanship to a worldwide audience.

Modern Era and Continued Excellence

In recent years, Buccellati has continued to evolve while staying true to its heritage. The brand joined the Richemont Group in 2020, uniting all family branches under one banner and moving its offices to a historic building in Milan. The celebration of its centennial in 2019 included the creation of a Buccellati-cut diamond, featured in a collection of one-of-a-kind pieces.

Today, Buccellati remains a symbol of exquisite craftsmanship and timeless elegance. The brand's dedication to quality, innovative designs, and rich history inspires and enchants jewelry lovers worldwide. From its beginnings in Milan to its global presence, Buccellati’s legacy is a testament to Italian goldsmithing's enduring beauty and artistry.
